AMAZON GAMES UI ART & UX DESIGN (2020-2024)

The pandemic that hit in 2020 changed the landscape of our industry and WFH options in general. I needed to prioritize family first and had to work remote out of CA during that time but unfortunately this also meant that I wasn’t able to stay at Psyonix/Epic. Fortunately, Amazon Games was able to accommodate and it’s been a great learning and work experience since!

I was the UX Manager on our team, managing and mentoring our East Coast time zone contractors and junior level UI Artists and designers. I worked on the UX Design and UI Art for a number of features for the game New World, which launched in 2021.

WEAPON ABILITY ICONS

New World has a very large number of weapons and abilities that the player can choose from and upgrade.

The design of these items had to clearly indicate visually what the ability did, but also fit within the established art style and aesthetic of the New World universe that existed in the traditional 1600-1700’s time period but also had a supernatural vibe. The iconography used a more flat, illustrative style but also had a distressed/hash mark overlay masking.

PVP RANK PROGRESSION ICONS

Just like with Rocket League, the PVP designers for New World wanted to add a medal rank progression system that had 3 tiers of progression per rank. These ranks needed to stand out more than the traditional iconography for New World.

CRAFTING

Crafting is a major part of any MMO and is constantly shifting in design to add new and interesting layers. I’ve been working on several new additions including UX and UI Art for how to add new items, new updates to the experience, and making old weapons more interesting and powerful for late game content.
